A Little History ...

The Beaufort Arms has been offering refreshment and accommodation way back to the times when it is believed Roundhead soldiers refreshed themselves here during the siege of Raglan Castle in 1646. Until 1842 it was an important mail coach stop on the South Wales - Fishguard route to the Irish ports. In a village known for the longevity of its inhabitants, some older villagers recall several British Prime Ministers, in this last century staying here whilst fishing on the Wye and Usk rivers.

Its close links with the magnificent Raglan Castle, "one of the finest medieval castles in Europe", show both in its proximity to the castle itself and in features around the original parts of the inn. The large stone fireplace in the lounge is believed to originate from the castle itself and underground wells and tunnels exist in the inn.

Since 2002 when Eliot and Jana Lewis became owners, their youthful energy has overseen the complete refurbishment of the inn. Mindful of its past in the retention of old beams, slate floors and wooden panelling, but adding a modern elegance with design led furniture and paintings as well as every modern comfort. Unique to the inn and featured in 'Monmouthshire County Life' magazine are the paintings around the corridors and rooms, many with a touch of humour, painted by Jana herself. Her original training in design is put to good use in her new career as hotel owner.
